FAQ

How long was the adoption process?
5.5 months! Most adoptions don't move this quickly and we sure are thankful that ours did!

How much did the adoption cost? How did you come up with the money?
It costs approximately $25,000 to adopt one child from Ukraine. This amount can vary depending on the time of year (summer season means WAY more expensive plane tickets) and the region you spend most of your time in.
We used money from our savings and were blessed by the generosity of friends and family and various grant organizations. Some of our fundraisers included: a huge garage sale, t-shirt sale, Silent Auction, shoe drive, and American Girl doll giveaway.
Please, if you are considering adoption, do not let money be the thing that stops you! God will provide every penny you need. There are many great resources out there (in print and via the internet) on creative fundraising. There are also many grant organizations who delight in helping families fund their adoption process.

Why adopt? Isn't one kid with Down syndrome enough?
We firmly believe that each and every human being was created in the image of God and has great value and worth. Our hearts were broken when we found out how orphans with Down syndrome and other special needs are treated in some countries around the world. In Ukraine (as well as many other Eastern European countries), orphans with Down syndrome spend the first 4 years of their life in a "baby house." Many times these beautiful children are left in their cribs the vast majority of the day and receive no interaction other than hurried feedings and one diaper change a day. At age 4, the children with special needs are transferred to adult age mental institutions. The statistics vary, but it is understood that something like 90% of these sweet children die within one year of being transferred.

Galations 4:4-7 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

James 1: 27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
